1. Wildlife priorities: Stick to your role as guardian
Is it more interested in conservation or the production of wildlife meat? From a conservation perspective, creating a larger commercial market for wildlife species is just inviting poachers to eliminate a species from the wild, because one can easily poach an animal at less expense than one can raise the animal. 2. Air pollution curbs proposed
A North Country congressman unveiled a bill today that would curb air pollution with the hope of reducing acid rain as well as limit mercury and other pollutants in water. Air pollution curbs proposed. The legislation was lauded by the Adirondack Mountain club, which since 1922 has advocated for conservation in the park and beyond. It would also eliminate the "grandfather" clause that protects existing power plants. Congressman McHugh offers bill to restrict 4 contaminants. McHugh,...

3. State fines Pasco company for lack of air permit
The agency says the permit would have required air pollution-control equipment for the plants, which would have helped prevent several tons of pollutants from being released into the air. A Department of Ecology spokeswoman, Jani Gilbert, says that without the pollution-control equipment, the plants released pollutants that included an estimated 11 tons of sulfuric acid mist per year. The plants produce magnesium sulfate, or Epsom salts, and calcium nitrate for use as fertilizers. State...

4. UN, IOC: Beijing's air a problem
In an overall positive assessment of Beijing's preparations, an IOC inspection team said air quality was a major concern and it was monitoring the situation. With less than 10 months to go before the 2008 Olympics, air pollution emerged as one of Beijing's biggest headaches. Verbruggen and other IOC officials said they were confident that measures such as traffic controls should reduce pollution. IOC president Jacques Rogge had warned in the past that pollution might force some outdoor...

5. Market-Driven Approach to Habitat Preservation Proposed
If a developer wants to destroy valuable habitat, he or she has to purchase a permit from someone who has created a piece of valuable habitat elsewhere. European ecologists and economists are looking into whether a technique for reducing greenhouse gases could also be used to help conserve wildlife. The problem is solvable, proponents indicate, if some measure representing proximity to other wildlife and habitats is built into the ecological value of each land. So far, the idea looks...

6. UN concern over Olympic pollution
The 163-page report states that, between 2000 and 2006, the Chinese authorities reduced the concentration of some key air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. While UNEP officials praise the Chinese government for achievements already made, they say air pollution remains a "legitimate concern" But it seems clear from the report that air pollution will not significantly improve before the Olympics begins next August. The report seems to contradict claims from Beijing...

8. Wodraska: Wodraska: Off the beaten path: Clean air concern for Beijing ...
Until the situation improves, the air quality is going to be awful for everyday folks; can you imagine what it would be like for athletes who are pushing themselves to their physical limits and taking in big gulps of gunky air? Yep, it was a wise call to protect the athletes. Several sporting events scheduled for this weekend in San Diego were cancelled or postponed because of the logistics of holding events in the fire-ravaged area, but also, to some extent, because of the poor air...

9. Tom Stienstra
That's because hunter dollars from licenses, fees and taxes on firearms, ammunition and other gear pay for habitat management and acquisition and wildlife protection. Yet in the same span, the number of wildlife watchers, including birdwatchers, increased from 62 million to more than 71 million. At the same time, Swan is producing a film called "Endangered Species: The Fish and Game Warden," to raise awareness of the critical shortage of game wardens in California, and also is co-author of...
