20. Food and gas drive big jump in consumer prices
Inflation was docile in other areas, with prices for computers, clothes, cars and airline tickets all falling. While investors were happy, the big increases in energy and food still meant consumers were falling behind in the cost-of-living struggle. Excluding energy and food, the increase for so-called core inflation was just 0.1 percent. The government said in a separate report that weekly earnings for non-supervisory workers, after adjusting for inflation, fell by 0.2 percent last month....

21. Bubbly in the batter
I use espresso to flavour my coffee cakes and it gives a deep, rich flavour right through the cake. It may be an acquired taste in the cup, but as a flavouring it works extraordinarily well. I use really great filter coffee, freshly ground. Use 'Eurofizz' rather than anything artisan made: it's gassier and will give a lighter result. The batter will look odd when you pour in the sparkling water, but will be fine when it goes into the fryer. Whether you will want anyone to see it on your...

23. Atlas is a vital guide for cheese lovers
In the last generation or so, artisanal American cheesemakers -- like artisanal bakers, winemakers and brewers -- have rediscovered the art and craft of making great cheese. These days, a cheese connoisseur can spend a lifetime investigating the great cheeses of America -- but only if he or she can figure out where to look. And though it's an imperfect book, it's certainly an essential reference for cheese lovers who are traveling, shopping or just dreaming about cheese. Not so long ago,...

25. GROCERY: Dairy Case: Who stole the cheese?
GROCERY: Dairy Case: Who stole the cheese? As the gourmet/specialty segment shifts focus to the deli section, dairy case stalwarts are responding with new flavors and more promotions. deli But grocers can't ignore the fact that excitement in the cheese category has clearly passed to another part of the perimeter, and sales growth has followed. If the current trend for specialty cheeses holds, however, the dairy case could find itself conceding the cheese battle to deli. How can dairy...

26. KATHY'S RUSSIAN DRESSING
Some vinaigrettes require twice as much oil as vinegar, but this version reverses those proportions, using two tablespoons of red wine vinegar for each tablespoon of olive oil. For mayonnaise-based dressings, I often cut the fat and calories at least 50 percent by substituting light mayo for the regular kind. The main secret for slimming down most salad dressings is to trim the amount of oil or mayonnaise in the recipe. Combine all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. If you...
