10. More hog farms built in past 10 years despite moratorium
The company s permit now prohibits it from buying hogs from farms built after 2002 unless the farms use such methods, a ban that state regulators continue to support. Under those exemptions to the 1997 law that established the moratorium, 73 new hog farms have been built, 25 have been expanded and four were reactivated, state water regulators told The News & Observer of Raleigh. The majority of these exceptions use waste pits and spray fields to dispose of hog manure, both of which the...

11. Feral pigs are going hog wild in Pennsylvania
Remember the 1,100-pound "Hogzilla" shot in a Georgia swamp a couple years ago? Rumors began circulating a year or two ago that hogs that had escaped from commercial hunting preserves were creating little wild piggy families in a few spots in Penn's Woods. Delicious world of the other white meat Pork quality improves, making the easy-to-prepare meat an even better option No meat offers a cook more than pork does. Compared with 40 years ago, each sow today produces 50 percent bigger litters, according to a study in the journal Advances in Pork Production, and pigs need one-third less food to produce one-third more lean meat (and are ready for slaughter at a far younger age hence pork s turn from pink to pale) It seems that you can t turn...

13. TUESDAY MORNING CORN UPDATE
The most talked about trade seems to be the long beans/short corn as we continue to get acreage estimates showing big corn acres and lower bean acres. Informa was supposed to release their acreage estimate but has delayed that release until Friday with rumors that they have increase their corn acres and lowered their corn acres from their original estimate released last month. Look for the corn market to open lower today on no new news and see if the funds come after the corn market again...

The two companies, among the largest in their industries, will use beef, pork and poultry byproduct fat to manufacture the fuel. ConocoPhillips added that the two companies plan to make as much as 175 (m) million gallons per year of renewable diesel. Tyson says the move should be good for its bottom line as well, adding up to 16 cents per share in additional annual earnings. Production is slated to begin late this year. 15. Unusual combination for winning sausages
Pork, watercress and goat's cheese might seem like an unusual combination for a sausage but it certainly won the judges' approval at the recent Great Hampshire Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal competition, scooping two champion trophies for Hampshire Fare producer Martin Martindale, of Greenfield Pork Products. Unusual Combination For Winning Sausages (from Hampshire Chronicle) Pork, watercress and goat's cheese might seem like an unusual combination for a sausage but it certainly won the judges'...

16. A boar? Shoot to kill
Wild hogs roaming through at least 39 states lately are alarming wildlife officials by their population growth in northern states, including Michigan. The swine cause crop damage, pose a serious threat to the health and welfare of domestic swine, endanger humans and wildlife populations and the environment by disrupting the ecosystem, officials say. State officials again are encouraging licensed hunters -- with either large- or small-game permits -- to shoot free-ranging wild pigs that are...

17. The Prairie Star
Live cattle- With the high input costs of escalating corn prices and high priced feeder cattle, feedlots and cattle producers trying to increase their marketing efforts. Weekly export sales will be of more importance as the trade will want to measure if the high price levels are curbing demand. Basis levels should remain very tight and likely will narrow further as producers have essentially completed the harvest and safely tucked the crop away in storage. Prices will work higher into the...

18. With fewer students interested in farming, schools shift focus
Cloud High, students learned to tend chickens, fatten hogs and cattle for market, and respect the land that produced their food. Today, only three high schools in the longtime rural county offer electives related to agriculture: veterinary studies at Osceola and Harmony, and horticulture at Poinciana. Educators point to several reasons for the change: State emphasis on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test has made administrators reluctant to take time away from reading and math; an...
