FDA is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services and consists of eight centers/offices: Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), Office of the Commissioner (OC), Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA).

The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is one of eight centers within FDA. The Center promotes and protects the public health and economic interest by ensuring that: Food is safe, nutritious and wholesome, cosmetics and dietary supplements are safe and food, cosmetics, and dietary supplements are honestly, accurately and informatively labeled.
