  Matriarchs of the Turf
As long as Bull Lea lived Calumet Farm was the dominant stable in horse racing. But when Bull Lea died and failed to leave a successful son the fortunes of Calumet declined rapidly. It wasn't until the 1970s when they began to patronize high class outside stallions that Calumet reversed its decline. Many of the top horses bred by Calumet Farm in the 1970s and 1980s were from dams inbred to Bull Lea.

  Information on Citation
Owned and bred by Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, Citation was a bay colt, the son of Bull Lea and the mare, Hydroplane II. Trained by Horace A. "Jimmy" Jones, Citation won his first start as a two-year-old at Havre de Grace, Maryland. For the year he would race nine times, winning eight of them and earning $155,680.

  Affirmed/Alydar was Racing's Greatest Rivalry
From the time the two chestnuts raced neck-and-neck down the stretch in the 1978 Belmont Stakes, their names have been inexorably linked. Affirmed and Alydar. Anytime something is written about one, the other is inevitably woven into the story. Never in the annals of racing have two horses battled as frequently with so much at stake and so little separating them.

  Thoroughbred Champions: Affirmed
Affirmed will always be remembered by the people for his great winning resolve and his victories in the 1978 Triple Crown series. Surely he was one of the greats. But he was to meet his match later on in that year. In an extraordinary matchup, he met the great Seattle Slew, winner of the previous year's Triple Crown, in the 1978 Marlboro Cup.

Book Review - Assault (Thoroughbred Legends)
In the year that the Breeders' Cup came to the Lone Star State for the first time, sixth-generation Texan Eva Jolene Boyd set out to write a fitting tribute to Assault. Bred in south Texas at Robert Kleberg's King Ranch, the undersized horse dubbed the "Clubfooted Comet" swept the Triple Crown in 1946 for trainer Max Hirsch, who also hailed from Texas.

  Best Pal: A Special Horse
Best Pal was - above all else - a professional racehorse. The husky gelding came out running early and hardly ever stopped during a remarkable career that saw him win 18 races - 17 of them stakes - and $5,668,245 in purses, far and away the record for a California-bred, and at the time putting him 3rd on the all time money earning list behind Alysheba and John Henry.

  The Horses of Calumet Farm
Bull Lea was purchased in 1936 at the Saratoga Yearling Sale by Warren Wright Sr. for $14,000. During his racing career he more that justified his purchase price, earning $94,825 with 10 wins in 27 starts. After three years on the track, he was retired to stud, standing for a fee of $750. It was as a sire that Bull Lea would etch his name in American turf history.

  Dan Patch Historical Society
The Dan Patch Historical Society was formed for the purpose of collection, preservation and dissemination of historical knowledge and artifacts about the horse, Dan Patch and its owner, M. W. Savage.

International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities
