Man o' War went to the post 21 times and won 20 races. He won one race by an incredible 100 lengths and triumphed in another carrying 138 pounds. He whipped a Triple Crown champion by seven lengths in a match race. He brought international recognition to Kentucky breeders and made the United States the racing center of the world.

A very high-class racehorse, he was most effective up to 2000 meters. Gordon Richards said that he was traveling like a winner until the last 200m. of the Epsom Derby, from which point he tired and swerved to the right. This would suggest that he did not truly stay 2400 meters. A self-willed, very stubborn individual, he played up badly on the way to the start for the Two Thousand Guineas.

Phar Lap, a New Zealand-bred horse, remains an enduring institution of the Australasian turf. He also achieved world fame after winning the Agua Caliente Handicap near Tijuana in Mexico to take his race record to an amazing 37 wins, two seconds and three thirds in 51 starts.

Exterminator won his first race at Latonia in Kentucky, and then raced in Canada three more times as a two year old, winning one of those races and coming in fourth in the other two. He sprained a muscle in the last race, and was given some time off to heal and grow. Mr. Milam nominated him for the Kentucky Derby.

Hallowed Dreams Going for 16 in a Row. The undefeated three-year-old filly Hallowed Dreams will make her bid to tie the modern-day national record of 16 consecutive wins this Saturday against four opponents in the $40,000 Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, LA.

Known as "Big Red," this legendary chestnut Thoroughbred was born in 1917 and raced in 1919 and 1920. Man O' War passed away on November 1, 1947 after suffering a heart attack. More than two thousand people attended the funeral, which was broadcast by radio. The great stallion was the first horse to be embalmed and he lay in state for several days in a specially made casket lined with his racing colors (black and gold), the first horse ever buried this way.

Native Dancer: The Grey Ghost: Hero of a Golden Age. In 1953, Native Dancer, a grey, 3-year-old racehorse bred and owned by Alfred Vanderbilt, captured the hearts and imagination of America and was declared "one of the three most popular figures in the country," along with Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan.

In 1964, Northern Dancer reached the most important year of his racing career. As a 3-year old, he was eligible to compete in the top classics. He first won the Flamingo Stakes, and then the Florida Derby, both with Bill Shoemaker as his jockey.

On Tuesday May 7, 1968, three days after Dancer's Image won the Kentucky Derby, Dancer's Image lost the Kentucky Derby. Dancer's Image failed a drug test. This fact opens up a world of questions.
