  Conversion of Arid Grasslands to Desert Shrubland by Grazing
The conversion of Mojave and Colorado River. Arid perennial grasslands to desert shrubland. These series of photo illustrate a hypothesis that within historic times (prior to 1850) over 50% of the Mojave and Colorado deserts were covered with perennial native grasses which have been removed by grazing and these areas have been converted to desert shrubland.

  Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie was established in 1996 and is the first national tallgrass prairie in the country. It is administered by the U.S. Forest Service, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and with the support of hundreds of volunteers and partner agencies, businesses, and organizations. Part of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, Midewin remained largely closed to the public while the Army cleaned up contamination remaining from decades of TNT manufacturing and packaging.

The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are presently 148 Contracting Parties to the Convention, with 1526 wetland sites, totaling 129.5 million hectares, designated for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
