The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment. We deal with biological, chemical, physical and geophysical data, and our databases contain measurements of nearly 10,000 different variables. Many of our staff have direct experience of marine data collection and analysis. They work alongside information technology specialists to ensure that data are documented and stored for current and future use.

As a National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) the Irish Marine Data Centre is a national focal point for oceanographic data. It is charged with storing, maintaining and tracking key oceanographic data sets, and developing online services to make data and information available. The Data Centre comprises 2 teams – the Oceanographic Services Team with ecological, geological and physical oceanographic expertise, and the Data Management Team, with specialist expertise in handling, processing and accessing data.

MARIS originates from a Netherlands governmental initiative to improve overview and access to marine expertise, information and data related to the sea and its uses and to stimulate its wider use by governmental departments, scientific institutes and industrial companies. Started in 1985 as a governmental project MARIS is operating since the end of 1989 as an independent foundation. In 1996 the foundation has established the MARIS BV (private company) as working party for the foundation, however still with strong links to the Netherlands government and departments & institutes.

The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) is responsible for archiving and distributing data relevant to the physical state of the ocean. Most of the products available at the PO.DAAC were obtained from satellites and are intended for use in oceanographic and interdisciplinary scientific research. The German Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) serves as a focal point for the national and international exchange of oceanographic data. The objectives of DOD are: 1. to acquire the marine data sampled by German institutes and agencies, archive it and maximize its utilisation by promoting data exchange on a national and international level; 2. to meet Germany's international data exchange obligations according to the resolution of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and under the Oslo/Paris and Helsinki Conventions regarding monitoring of the North Sea/North-East Atlantic and Baltic Sea, respectively.
