The Agroecological Institute was founded as a scientific institution for applied research and development in agriculture, ecology and environment on the initiative of its supporting association having the same name. It is affiliated to the Agricultural Faculty of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg and has branches in Halle, Bad Lauchstadt and Bernburg.

The Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute (BMBRI) has supported the development of world-class malting barley varieties in Canada since 1948. It is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and its members include leading maltsters and brewers. BMBRI performs two core activities — evaluating new malting barley varieties and funding research that assists malting barley development.

The ACRE (991 acre farm facility) is utilized by 53 researchers from 8 departments, conducting approximately 180 research projects. This researchers conduct studies ranging from basic to applied research: plant breeding and genetics, crop production and soil tillage management, plant physiology, soil fertility, weed control, disease and insect resistance and control.

The Brownstown Agronomy Research Center (BARC) was established in 1937 and consists of 208± acres. Of this approximate 208 acres, 160 acres are owned by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees and 48 acres are crop shared from landowners adjacent to or in close proximity of the facility.
