The National Bee Unit delivers the Bee Health Programmes on behalf of Defra and National Assembly NAW in England & Wales. Our function is to protect the honeybee, an essential pollinator of crops and wild plants, from threats such as serious disease and environmental damage. We do this using an integrated programme of apiary inspections, diagnosis, research and development, training and extension provided by a team of bee scientists and experienced practical beekeepers.

American foulbrood (AFB) is one of the most important beekeeping diseases. It is caused by the spore-forming bacterium, Bacillus larvae. The spores are resistant to heat and drought and can remain dormant many years.
• Information on Kashmir Bee Virus
The Kashmir Bee Virus is a natural disease of the eastern honeybee Apis cerana. After the introduction of the western honeybee Apis mellifera into the distribution range of A. cerana in southern Asia, the virus made a Âspecies-jump and began to parasitize its new host. KBV of honeybees is a RNA-virus in the newly established family Dicistroviridae. RNA viruses (in comparison to DNA-viruses) are very small and associated with the mitochondria of host cells.
