The School of Food Biosciences is the largest department of its kind in the UK. The school offers 5 undergraduate science degree programmes in areas involving food and biotechnology: Biotechnology, Food Science, Food Science with Business, Food Technology, Nutrition and Food Science. All the programmes can be taken as either a 3-year programme or a 4-year programme including industrial/professional training. The School also offers 3 taught, post-graduate MSc programmes - Food Science, Food Technology Quality Assurance, and Nutrition and Food Science. Modern facilities exist to investigate most elements of the food chain, from food bioprocessing, microbial and molecular science, nutrition, and safety, to effects in the gastrointestinal tract. The primary objective of Greenmount is to develop people through education, training, business and technology programmes and to meet the needs of the agriculture and horticulture industries. Greenmount offers courses in agriculture at Degree (in partnership with Queen's University Belfast), Higher National Diploma, Higher National Certificate, National Diploma and Certificate level, in horticulture at Higher National Diploma, National Diploma and Certificate level and in rural and countryside management at Higher National Diploma. Courses leading to NVQ Awards are also offered in both agriculture and horticulture. To cater for the needs of those already working in the agriculture and horticulture sectors, short technical and management courses are also provided. The Greenmount Estate is comprised of several farms and units which are combined to form three Agriculture Development Centres and a Horticulture Development Centre. The Walled Garden, grounds and recreational areas combine to form the Amenity Horticulture Centre. With its farms, units, nature trail, ponds and woodland areas, the Estate fully demonstrates the principles and practices of efficient food production and good countryside management.

Life Sciences is a large, dynamic Department within the Faculty of Science and Technology, with a full-time staff of twenty four. Degrees have been offered by the Department since 1957, with continuing innovation in degree provision. In recent years we have introduced new undergraduate degrees in Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare, Ecology and Conservation, Sports Science (delivered in association with Anglia Ruskin University Regional Colleges), Natural History and Marine Biology as well as a very successful Internet-based postgraduate MSc in Biomedical Sciences. Alongside teaching, staff in the Department undertake research in a wide range of areas. This includes DNA profiling of bird populations, behavioural studies on baboons in Tanzania, entomological studies on Fenland restoration projects, behavioural studies on insect natural enemies, studies of bone disease, physiological and pathological responses to extreme endurance exercise and tumour pathology.
